We were sitting at home relaxing and talking about the day when the phone rang. I've always heard people talk about how a phone call changed their life, but I had never had that experience for myself. Michael's mother's question, drew us out of that solitude. "Have you heard there was an earthquake in Haiti? Our minds started racing - we must call Nick and find out if the orphanage is ok. "I wonder how Herby is?", Michael asked. Of course there was no answer on Nick's phone so we just sat and waited and watched the news. Our phone began to ring with questions from our Newberry friends, "How are your people in Haiti?" and "When will you go?" We finally were able to reach our Haitian friends through Facebook. They asked Dr. Mike to please come and help.
The day after the earthquake a nurse from NCMH called and asked Michael what the hospital could do to help. He directed her to Andy Hawkins and within days Mike and Andy were working together to raise money and support...
Word of mouth and Facebook were our greatest resources for donations. Andy posted the need for airflights to Haiti, Betsy Brooks, a paralegal from Pope and Hudgens called and told Michael that her cousin was married to the daughter of Wade McGuinn and he had a plane and that he was involved with Haiti. Diane Dillingham responded to a message that was posted through the hospital, she put Michael in touch with Dr. Bobby McBride, DDS.
