Haiti Day One

Medical Clinic begins today. The team has hit the ground running. The trip so far... 6 team members began their journeys in Columbia, SC and Ft. Lauderdale,FL ( Dr. Leo Vieira) at 8:30 am Tuesday morning and they walked into the orphanage after being on 2 airplanes and on a 4 hour van ride through Haiti and into Port Au Prince and on to the orphanage. They arrived at their destination at 8:30 pm on Tuesday tired but with luggage ad supplies in tact.

The sights along the way turned even the strongest Doctor's stomach. There is a landscape of dead people on the sidewalks and roads. In a way I wish so badly that I was there, and in another sense, I don't know if I would be strong enough to contain my sadness and be any good to the team. I'm told that medical clinic at the orphanage will begin today. They will begin seeing patients who live around the orphanage.

This is from the nurse that has been at the orphanage for a couple of days. She did a lot of the leg work for the team before they got there...she wrote Michael to tell him what she was seeing.

1. Saturday -
we went a did a survey of the neighborhood today. not a lot of injuries around here-- lots of houses down-- U saw a 2 year old that a wall fell on -- he hasn't walked on his leg since the earthquake and it was slightly rotated out.

2.
I went to the "Centre Hospitalier de L'Universite De L"academie Hatienne" today...I spoke with 2 dr's there. The woman in charge is Dr. Marie Pologne J Reve'-- she is Haitian and speaks very fluent English. They are expecting you on Friday (hope you don't mind me booking you:) They have a surgery suite--they said you will have plenty of cases--the place was packed-- people everywhere. She seemed very relieved and appreciative. So, they have a surgery suite with oxygen. She asked if you could bring a sterilizer?? She also had some questions about her monitors. She said there were many many people that will need help.
This Doctor is in Titayne about 45 minutes from the orphanage. She is so excited about them coming-- i think they will find some good work there. but really-- any work they can do is good work here in haiti!"
