Our phone began to ring as soon as the news about the earthquake hit the radio and television broadcasts. It was evident that our passion for Haiti was remembered by our friends in our small town and also others across the United States. An employee at Newberry County Memorial Hospital called Michael and said "What can we do?" He directed her to Andy Hawkins, the spokesperson for the hospital. Andy and Michael began to work together to see what was the best way the hospital could help. I saw a post on facebook where Heartline Ministries was planning to take doctors into Haiti and have them work at a makeshift clinic that was being set up. Michael offered to be on the next plane that was headed out. That was not God's plan.
We began to try to call our friends in Haiti and of course there was no answer. We prayed and prayed and waited to hear that the children at the orphanage and the translators and workers were all ok. Finally the word came that everything except a security wall was intact.
After seeing photos of the devastation in the area where the orphanage is located, we contacted the JBA and offered to take a team of doctors and nurses to the orphanage. Since it is approx. 30 miles outside of PAP, there is no media to cover what happened there. The pictures that were posted on facebook of the area broke our hearts. The brother of a friend had been killed inside of a building when it collapsed. We later learned that there was another man in the building with him as well who lost his life as well.
The team began to come together after many hours of phone conversations about planes and pilots. A team of 5 men left Columbia, SC on a private jet and picked up the 6th team member in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. They arrived in Haiti with 14 bags full of medical supplies and food for the team. They will not be responsible for taking any food or necessities from the people of Haiti. They are there to give...more to come...
